Courtland “Court” Gentry (aka the Gray Man) faces his most lethal foe yet—Russell “Dead Eye” Whitlock, who has the same training and background as himself—in Greaney’s action-filled fourth thriller featuring the ex-CIA agent turned hired assassin (after 2011’s Ballistic). Court has made a number of powerful enemies, including Russian mafia boss Gregor Sidorenko, whose heavily fortified dacha outside St. Petersburg he attacks in a one-man air raid. The CIA, for reasons that remain unclear, has issued a shoot-on-sight order for Court and put Whitlock on his trail. The final piece of the puzzle is Mossad targeting team leader Ruth Ettinger, who has learned from a reliable source that Iranian agents have hired Court to assassinate the Israeli prime minister. The various moves of each of the skilled and ruthless principals play out against a constantly shifting background of changing goals and allegiances.
