It's an inconvenient time for Sinter Blackwell to realize he's bisexual. He's a 25-year-old American actor working in London, living far away from his disapproving parents in the Pacific Northwest, and enjoying a flirtation with his director Fiona. But he can't deny that his favorite parts of each day are the messages from his gay best friend Andy in Seattle—whom Sinter once kissed when they were 15.
Finally he decides to return to America to visit Andy and discover what's between them, if anything. He isn't seeking love, and definitely doesn't want drama. But both love and drama seem determined to find him. Family complications soon force him into the most consequential decisions of his life, threatening all his most important relationships: with Andy, Fiona, his parents, and everyone else who's counting on him. Choosing the right role to play has never been harder.

Ringle’s entertaining, nuanced contemporary follows a minor character from Relatively Honest through his realization that he is bisexual. High-strung actor Sinter Blackwell, struggling to support himself at age 25, faces the end of a gig in London and the prospect of returning home to Portland, Ore., and his unsupportive, conservative, and religious parents. His androgynous looks and goth style catch the eye of Fiona Wyndham, a director casting the lead of her 1980s new wave pop film. Sinter accepts the part, and Fiona begins obliquely flirting with him during filming. As Sinter considers a relationship, he realizes his feelings for his even-tempered childhood best friend, Andy Ortiz, might be romantic. A confession to Andy (who has long nursed a crush on Sinter) leads to Sinter deciding to move to Seattle, where he and Andy begin a friends-with-benefits arrangement. The pair’s obvious chemistry flourishes into blissful sex, but snags on their refusals to admit their depth of attachment. Life-altering news from Fiona destabilizes Sinter and Andy’s progress toward something more permanent, and Sinter’s flailing attempts to cope cause pain on all sides. Ringle navigates her twisty revelations and dramatic conclusion with just enough weight to avoid mawkishness, and her characters earn their happy ending. Readers looking for introspective romances with winding plots will enjoy this heartfelt novel. Agent: Linda Migalti, Schulman & Assoc.

Known for her fantasy romances (e.g., The Goblins of Bellwater), Ringle here switches gears with a realistic story of a young man wrestling with his bisexuality. Twenty-five-year-old actor Sinter Blackwell has always been attracted to women. But lately he can't stop thinking about his gay best friend, Andy, living back home in Seattle and newly returned to the dating market. Even a mutual attraction between Sinter and his female director can't distract him from fantasies about Andy and what would happen if they followed up on that kiss they shared as teens. Though it means giving up a budding acting career in London, Sinter is willing to follow his heart and take a chance on Andy, even though he risks disappointing his conservative family. When the two best friends finally get together, Sinter discovers that his new identity may take more courage than he's comfortable with. VERDICT This honest coming-of-age romance will resonate with those who are discovering their own sexual identity, while Sinter and Andy's flirtatious, tentative romance should please all lovers of the genre.--Kathryn Howe, Saint John Free P.L., NB
