After spending centuries in a cryogenic chamber, a Wonder Woman awakens to a postapocalyptic Earth where the few bands of surviving humans' are hunted by horribly mutated beasts called Haedras. Her search for information on what caused societies' downfall and the events preceding her long slumber lead her to a ramshackle settlement called Camp New Hope, where she overthrows an authoritarian leader and offers his former subject refuge on Themyscira, the legendary island of her birth. Johnson (Murder Falcon) presents the classic heroine as possessing a savage battle prowess and profound compassion for all life in equal measure, building to the shattering revelation that Themyscira is no longer the paradise of her youth, and worse--she herself played a terrible role in the downfall of humankind. VERDICT At a glance, it may seem as though Johnson's thrilling battle sequences are the main draw here, but he quickly establishes his profound understanding of what makes Wonder Woman a unique and enduring character. Grand adventure infused with real emotion--superhero comics don't get much better than this.
