Grades 2-4 In a multichapter tale with strong resemblances to a certain holiday classic--plus lots of cute bunnies--a sudden shortage of his favorite food, brussels sprouts, sends solitary sourpuss The Grumpus (The being short for Theodore) into such a rage that he tears down all his town's seasonal decorations and sets out for the North Pole with a vague plan to "STOP CHRISTMAS ONCE AND FOR ALL!" Following a "whoopsie" off a cliff, a woke encounter with a grandmotherly couple of shepherds, and other delays that expose him to the cozy, secular joys of Christmas, he completes his physical and metaphorical journey just in time to actually help Father Christmas out in the clutch. Now kind rather than crabby, the shaggy, horned monster returns home with presents for all--and receives in turn a heaping helping of cabbagy treats that match the motif on his ugly sweater. The mix of sly tweaks and lightly laid-on lessons gives this some appeal as a read-aloud, though an earlier remark from Father Christmas that he can't stand treacle had better not apply to readers.
