Design, life, and culture • Art, books, events, people, and places of note.

Tactile beauty • Design workshop Powersurge has opened an immersive brick and mortar showroom at Auckland's stunning new architectural destination, Residium. We caught up with the duo behind the new space, Hugh McKellar of Residium and Powersurge's Andrea Harradine, to find out more about the creative partnership.

Behind the lens • The annual Resene Architecture & Design Film Festival is returning to Aotearoa this May. For more than a decade, the festival has brought the best in global architecture and design documentaries to the big screen. Here are a few highlights from this year's captivating line-up.

Arts • A selection of cultural events happening in New Zealand in the coming months.

Open Christchurch • For the fourth year running, Open Christchurch — Aotearoa New Zealand's largest independent architecture festival — invites residents and visitors to its annual celebration of the city's architectural excellence.

Sphere of influence • Wahine toa Deidre Brown has become the first non-architect to win New Zealand architecture's highest honour.

The odyssey of stone • From the mountains of Italy, Brazil, and Spain to an Auckland stone factory, the journey of exquisite architectural stone is as awe-inspiring as the stone itself.

Painted heritage • Drawing on eight distinctive New Zealand landscapes, each reminiscent of a particular era in our colour evolution between 1830 and 1930, a new collection from Dulux is designed to turn a fresh lens on heritage renovations. We explore some of these meticulously curated pairings of colour and landscape and their historical origins in our built environment.

Cultivated • We sat down with Cult Design founder, Richard Munao, to talk about the reopening of the brand's iconic showroom in Parnell, and where to from here as Cult embarks on a new journey in New Zealand to foster local creative talent.

Tangibility and presence • Nine years ago Scott Thorp moved to Christchurch to be closer to the mountains. It was here that he felt most connected to the land, and a place that ultimately inspired his photographic journey.

Scalloped curves • The sinuous lines of Tāmaki Makaurau's original foreshore are at the heart of Crosson Architects’ latest project: the Elysian luxury apartment building in Auckland's Parnell.

Open space • Perched atop an escarpment overlooking Whangārei's town basin, this home is the embodiment of the owners’ vision, the architects’ knowledge, and the builder's expertise.

Seven colourful little houses • Can great architecture and affordable housing coexist? In this case, absolutely, and it's a topic on which Daniel Sullivan of Common Architecture is unreservedly passionate.

A rhythm of colour • Using a vibrant palette, Common Architecture devised a series of playful interior schemes to create a distinct and joyful character.

Villa 1899 • Just before the turn of last century, two brothers built a pair of brick villas side by side in the Christchurch suburb of St Albans. They were to be used as show homes for their construction company, to demonstrate their building and master bricklaying skills.

Nature's narrative • In a steep site in Mount Pleasant left empty following the Christchurch earthquakes, Max Capocaccia's clients saw potential. As the owners of a local construction company, they wanted a challenge — something that would push the boundaries of residential...
