EDITOR'S LETTER

WHAT IS beauty?

in vogue • Collections as love letters to our culture.

drop it low • As designers bring down the waists, adapting to the shift is being new-season ready.

below the belt • On the hip's edge and dangerously downward, this gravity defying plunge is for the fearless.

crafted touch • Revisit basket weaves and macramé because it's time to get down and crafty. Soft natural shades and a roomy fits-all function go a long way.

EMERALD LANE • Green gems are a luxurious nod to nature. Whether they're a serpent's pair of piercing eyes or a dazzling sunburst, these verdant arrangements give outfits a tasteful after-dark decadence.

GOLDEN HOUR • For the season, consider rose-tinted timepieces that mimic a setting sun. These blush wrist adornments come in special bracelet formations, with diamond-set dials to catch the summer light.

in relative FASHION • In tracing the roots of the Philippine national dress, MARIAN PASTOR ROCES reiterates culture's wobbly relationship with indigenous materials.

many Muses • Following an evocative showcase at TernoCon III, Joey Samson reflects on the rich history and inspiration behind his collection.

DIGITAL native • Blogging since 2008, DENNY BALMACEDA is among the distinguishable pioneers of content creation.

jardin JAPONAIS • Seventy years after DIOR became the first haute couture house to show in the LAND OF THE RISING SUN, a comprehensive exhibit opens with a focus on the House and its Japanese connection.

XL • LOUIS VUITTON's seismic shift toward blown up prints and proportions proves that for this season, size matters.

beauty • Beauty in evolution.

Berry Talks • Romantic notes filled the runways as pale pinks, wild berries, bordeaux and deep burgundies painted lips across different parts of the globe. Gentle tones set the Givenchy and Louis Vuitton shows as makeup director Lucia Pieroni paired bleached brows with glossed over, curranthued lips for the former, and nude pinks and bold eyes braved the runway for the latter. Chanel couture brought rouge allure inks to life in playful pops of color as makeup artist Lisa Butler smeared lips in creamy scarlets. Meanwhile, monarchs and black swans flocked Valentino couture as strawberry reds, reminiscent of Elizabethan portraits, marked lips, and almost-black crimson kisses emulated the sardonic aura of the namesake ballet. Similarly, the Simone Rocha runway made noteworthy signatures in berry-stained lips.

Smoky Notes • The new smoky eye embraced dark tones with avant-garde shimmers and intense bright-hued pigments. Makeup artist Pat McGrath welcomed the season with purple smoke at Versace instead of the expected black. While at Off-White, electrifying eyes came in shadows with sharp flicks and cobalts extending out along water lines. At Dries Van Noten, makeup artist Lucy Bridge diffused hints of rich blues and opulent golds creating a luxurious finish. More innovations appeared at Dior where makeup artist Peter Philips created a deconstructed version buffed at the edges of the lower lash line of models. While at the set of Valentino, barely-there applications around lids added a glamorous yet subtle character to the updated smoky eye.
