Textural warmth • Considered curves, earthy tones and metallic accents make winter just a little warmer.

CITIES OF VILLAGES • Landscape architect and urban designer Garth Falconer, founder of Reset Urban Design, spoke to us about the emerging polycentric city, the challenges of traditional town centres, and where to from here as we plan and reinvent our urban fabric.

GLACIAL RETREAT • On a remote station about halfway between Aoraki Mount Cook and Timaru, near Lake Tekapo, this prefabricated house was designed to settle effortlessly into a harsh landscape of snow and storms, and long, dry summers.

MOUNTAIN HUT • Nestled high in a wild alpine expanse, this renovated hut was devised as a place of retreat and connection for its city-dwelling owners.

CASTLE ON THE HILL • This house — somewhat Mediterranean, somewhat Japanese in influence — extends around a compressed dirt courtyard high in the Port Hills overlooking Governors Bay.

An alchemy of form and Pinot • The winner of the 2021 Home of the Year award, Black Quail House by Bergendy Cooke is a highly bespoke solution for an equally unique vineyard site in Central Otago’s gold-mining heart.

Hill to horizon • In a setting of champagne golds and pastel purples, this Otama Beach house unfolds between retired paddock and pristine Coromandel coastline.

A feather for a friend • A two-bedroom, one bathroom house for a family of five. A deliberately slow building process. A semi-rural site that hangs perilously above, but apart from, the city. This year’s Small Home of the Year winner — designed by Irving Smith Architects for a builder friend — is feather-inspired and undeniably daring.

Sea and be seen • As density increases in our main cities, so does the tension between community and privacy. This Auckland home on a tight beachfront site manages the challenge beautifully.

House on Takapuna Beach • Auckland CAAHT Studio Synergy Build Group

Open homes • Sills van Bohemen Architects has created a subtle and intelligent multi-generational house in Auckland’s city-fringe.

FARM House • Avondale, Auckland Sills van Bohemen Architects Hybrid Build

Into the wild • On a southern beach where seals come ashore and kārearea hunt, this bunker-like holiday home was designed to tread lightly on the land.

The Coast House • Omaui, Southland Stacey Farrell Architect

A modern stone

Design for a changing world

Woven sculpture

Refined, beautiful, natural

Pacific threads • For six years New Zealand / Samoan textile designer Lucy Tupu (right), has been creating unique rugs in New York City that reference her cultural heritage. On the eve of launching her first studio here in Aotearoa, HOME discussed the influences and aspirations that fuel this expat.
