Homestead • Drawing on the verdant coastal and alpine landscapes of New Zealand, James Dunlop's latest collection is undeniably authentic and alluring.

Woven nature

Setting the mood • Our love for black is a well known national trait that influences everything from sporting team names through to our colour choices in clothing and appliances. It is no surprise then that this fascination has started to define some of the most successful interiors in recent years.

On the mood board

Classic coastal • New Zealand has come to perfect a style of interior design that combines the relaxed feeling of being at a beach with the comforts of being in a classically-influenced residence. It is a little bit luxurious while entirely down to earth.

Double doors • Utilising as much of the site as possible, this large family home stretches across the land between street and dunes, its northern landscape unfenced and indiscemibly folding into the public realm.

High tide • Cantilevering out towards the sea, and delicately folded at its centre, this clifftop house high above Tasman Bay takes its cues from the jagged rock formations below.

Light saver • Designed for a couple who are avid surfers, this clever addition on a compact coastal site is both overtly contemporary and entirely sympathetic to its context.

Nature's gallery • Higher density requires not just good design but good manners. This leafy, central-Nelson house by Irving Smith Architects sought to make the most out of a triple subdivision while being neighbourly to an old villa and tastefully contemporary.

vintage poolside vibes • Part Slim Aarons, part Los Angeles hillside pad, this fun and beautifully detailed Christchurch home by PRau is proud of its modernist soul.

In Detail • A deeper dive into the interior and architectural products specified by designers in this issue of HOME
